What is Thrill the World?

Hello again!

So hopefully you have signed up to be part of Gateshead Thrill Day on Saturday 26th October 2019 and are now well on your way to perfecting some thrilling moves.

We wanted, however, to let you know a bit more about Thrill the World before you take to our ghoulish dancefloor and attempt to break a world record. On that note, here is a brief description of how Thrll the World began and its evolution since.

Thrill the World began in 2006 and was set up by Ines Markeljevic. She read an article in 2005 entitled 'Thriller at Dundas Square' and that was how the idea began to set a world record for Largest Simultaneous Dance.

On October 29th 2006, 62 dancers performed the iconic routine in Toronto, Canada and set the world record for largest Thriller dance. The event was organised in just two weeks but still got the attention for media organisations like CBC, The Toronto Sun and The National Post. In fact, if you happen to own a copy of the 2008 Guiness World Records book, turn to page 8 to see this

The following year saw Thrill the World gain the interest from cities across the globe as 55 events took place in 52 cities, AND, in 5 continents. This then set the world record for Largest Simultaneous Thriller Dance with the Record Holders Republic and the World Records Academy with people of all ages organising the events and heling to set the world record. 2007's youngest reported dancer was 5 years old and the eldest 55+. The events also helped raise money for charities such as Red Cross, Sick Kids Foundation and ROOF (street youth centre).
The number of dancers grew each year as more people around the world aimed to break the world record. In fact, the event grew so popular that in 2008, Michael Jackson himself viewed the Los Angeles event from a helicopter!

The current record for Largest Simultaneous Thriller Dance comes from the 2012 event, where there were 181 registered events in 21 countries culminating in a total of 9650 zombies! And this year, we are hoping to once again break that record!

We hope you've enjoyed learning a bit more about the history of Thrill the World, and perhapshave been inspired to take part, OR host your own event!

It's not too late to register your event; in 2007, Kansas City, Missouri registered 2 days before the event!
